We are all products of our past. We learned to think a certain way about the many issues of life. But as believers in Christ, the Word of God renews our minds so we can see life from God’s perspective and reap the benefits that come with divine wisdom (Joshua 1:8).

By reading and meditating on the Word of God, we begin to see ourselves from the Lord’s perspective rather than from our past perceptions. When I was a new believer, I found that my soul (my mind, will and emotions) began to slowly catch up with what happened in my spirit. When I received Christ as my Lord, my spirit was reborn. I became a new person inside. I found that gradually, we can start to “think like God” (we think according to the guidelines revealed in God’s Word), instead of focusing on our past way of thinking.

When we lay our past (and present) before the Lord, His peace will stand guard at the door of our hearts and minds and change us. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:7-8).

When we make a decision to fix our minds on the truth of God’s Word, God’s peace will prevent the heartaches of this world from wrecking our lives. The Lord knows we are a work in progress, and He will change us daily—making us more like Him!
